Matthew 28.1-10

He is risen!!!

This is the good news about Jesus. This is the good news for the entire universe. Death has been defeated, the nations are blessed, for our king holds the keys of death and hades and he is alive!!!!

We started off this journey seeing Jesus the on of two people, David and Abraham. These two people show that Jesus is both:

Lord and Savior.

Jesus as the son of David is the king that the Jews were expecting. This is the same idea as being LORD, master, boss of everything. This entire book, we have seen Jesus setting himself up as King. We saw it with his life mirroring that of Moses' in Matthew 1-7, we saw it with his healings of the sick and hurting in Matthew 8-9. One of the purposes of this book is to show that Jesus is the king of the cosmos and that he is reigning, and our proper response as his citizens is to submit to his reign in our lives.

The fact that Jesus is alive proves this point further because not only did he rise from the dead, but he defeated all the evil forces behind sin and death, and rose victorious, guaranteeing his followers a future resurrection as well.

Jesus as the son of David, even at the resurrection, show that Jesus is LORD, he is the boss man.

Then there is Jesus, the son of Abraham, our savior. Remember the covenant God made with Abraham way back in Genesis 12:

 1 The LORD had said to Abram, “Leave your country, your people and your father’s household and go to the land I will show you.
 2 “I will make you into a great nation
   and I will bless you;
I will make your name great,
   and you will be a blessing.
3 I will bless those who bless you,
   and whoever curses you I will curse;
and all peoples on earth
   will be blessed through you.”

You better bet that all nations are blessed through Jesus the son of Abraham. It is because of Jesus' sacrifice and resurrection that our sins are forgiven and that we experience a resurrection of our own. Jesus' resurrection blesses the nations, for he is the savior of the world!!!!

Jesus is both Lord, the son of David, and Savior, the son of Abraham.

And these truths are affirmed by what happens next in the Gospel of Matthew. Let's take a look:

1 After the Sabbath, at dawn on the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to look at the tomb.
 2 There was a violent earthquake, for an angel of the Lord came down from heaven and, going to the tomb, rolled back the stone and sat on it. 3 His appearance was like lightning, and his clothes were white as snow. 4 The guards were so afraid of him that they shook and became like dead men.
 5 The angel said to the women, “Do not be afraid, for I know that you are looking for Jesus, who was crucified. 6 He is not here; he has risen, just as he said. Come and see the place where he lay. 7 Then go quickly and tell his disciples: ‘He has risen from the dead and is going ahead of you into Galilee. There you will see him.’ Now I have told you.”
 8 So the women hurried away from the tomb, afraid yet filled with joy, and ran to tell his disciples. 9 Suddenly Jesus met them. “Greetings,” he said. They came to him, clasped his feet and worshiped him. 10 Then Jesus said to them, “Do not be afraid. Go and tell my brothers to go to Galilee; there they will see me.”

The tomb is empty, the disciples have seen the risen Lord, Jesus Christ, the savior of the world. He is reigning and blessing the nations.

The only thing left for us to look at these next two days is this: "What is our appropriate response to Jesus as Lord and savior?
