Matthew 24.36-44

The thrust of this passage can be found in these two words...BE READY.

Be ready...why?

There are three reasons that Jesus gives in answer to this question, why? And they are as follows:

  1. Be ready...because no one knows
  2. Be ready...it will be a surprise
  3. Be ready...it will divide
Let's look at this passage:

36 “No one knows about that day or hour, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son,[f] but only the Father. 37 As it was in the days of Noah, so it will be at the coming of the Son of Man. 38 For in the days before the flood, people were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, up to the day Noah entered the ark; 39 and they knew nothing about what would happen until the flood came and took them all away. That is how it will be at the coming of the Son of Man. 40 Two men will be in the field; one will be taken and the other left. 41 Two women will be grinding with a hand mill; one will be taken and the other left.   42 “Therefore keep watch, because you do not know on what day your Lord will come. 43 But understand this: If the owner of the house had known at what time of night the thief was coming, he would have kept watch and would not have let his house be broken into. 44 So you also must be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect him.

The first reason Jesus says that we need to be ready is because no one know when Jesus is coming back...not even Jesus. Look at what he said:

36 “No one knows about that day or hour, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son,[f] but only the Father.

Because of this, there is no way we can calculate when we need to be ready before Jesus comes back. Jesus says clearly that NO ONE will know when he is coming back. So all those prophecies or predictions that you hear about on TV, THEY ARE FALSE!!!!!! Jesus himself does not know when he is coming back, so how could we?

Because of this, we have to be ready NOW. We can't put it off and try and trick the system and get ready right before Jesus comes back, it has to happen NOW!

The second reason Jesus says we need to be ready is because his coming will be a surprise. He references the story of Noah:

37 As it was in the days of Noah, so it will be at the coming of the Son of Man. 38 For in the days before the flood, people were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, up to the day Noah entered the ark; 39 and they knew nothing about what would happen until the flood came and took them all away. That is how it will be at the coming of the Son of Man.

If you remember the story about Noah, Noah preached and called all the people to repent but they would not listen. Because of this, they went about their normal ways of life, marrying and eating and drinking, right up to the time when the first drops of rain him the earth. Then they were surprised, shocked that Noah was right and that they had chosen wrong.

The same is true about Jesus' second coming. It will come when we least expect it, and it will surprise everyone, especially those who thought they were in but actually were out. This means, we need to be ready NOW. We don't need to put off our spiritual life and get it together after we get our finances get together, it is time to get right with God, TODAY. For, Jesus' coming is going to be a surprise.

Finally, the last reason that we need to be ready is because Jesus' second coming will divide even the most intimate relationships. This is what he says:

40 Two men will be in the field; one will be taken and the other left. 41 Two women will be grinding with a hand mill; one will be taken and the other left.

No one is exempt from being judged, and no one gets in on the tailcoat of someone else. No matter who you know, God is going to judge you, and whether you are a Christian or not determines if you get in. Jesus says friends, business partners, even coworkers who work together side by side in the field will be divided. One will be saved the other won't. Even women who work together, possibly a mother and daughter, will be divided by Jesus' second coming. Just because I work with Billy Graham doesn't get me in, it has to do with my personal relationship with Jesus Christ.

So Be Ready.

And that is exactly what Jesus says at the end of this passage:

42 “Therefore keep watch, because you do not know on what day your Lord will come. 43 But understand this: If the owner of the house had known at what time of night the thief was coming, he would have kept watch and would not have let his house be broken into. 44 So you also must be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect him.

So what about you? Are you ready? Are you prepared for the coming of Jesus, TODAY? If not, get ready.
