Matthew 24.45-51

We are now coming to the last section of the Olivet Discourse. In this section, Jesus tells four stories that illustrate the need to BE READY NOW for Christ's second coming. Today, we are going to cover the first story. It goes like this:

45 “Who then is the faithful and wise servant, whom the master has put in charge of the servants in his household to give them their food at the proper time? 46 It will be good for that servant whose master finds him doing so when he returns. 47 I tell you the truth, he will put him in charge of all his possessions. 48 But suppose that servant is wicked and says to himself, ‘My master is staying away a long time,’ 49 and he then begins to beat his fellow servants and to eat and drink with drunkards. 50 The master of that servant will come on a day when he does not expect him and at an hour he is not aware of. 51 He will cut him to pieces and assign him a place with the hypocrites, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

This story kind of serves as the introductory story for the next three stories. The point of this parable is quite simple...BE READY NOW!!!

What usually happens when someone leaves and is gone for a long time, is that the longer they are gone, the less you are prepared or expect them to return.

It's like if you leave a four year old in a room with a bunch of chocolate chip cookies and you tell him that he can't have any till you come back, then you leave. The longer you are gone, the more he feels that you aren't coming back, so he should just eat a cookie now.

The same is true with the second coming of Jesus. The longer Jesus doesn't come back, the longer it feels like he won't ever come back, so just do what you want.

But to be honest, the completely opposite is true. With every tick of the clock, we get one step closer to the second coming of Jesus. The message, BE READY NOW, is more urgent today than it has ever been before, because we are just that much more closer to Jesus' second coming.

With this in mind, we look at the last three parables, which teach us three different aspects of what it means to BE READY.

  1. Be Ready-Matthew 25.1-13
  2. Be Faithful-Matthew 25.14-30
  3. Be Loving-Matthew 25.31-46
So are you ready for Jesus to come back...now?
